In short: Bedrooms and living areas need coverings that close, block light and give privacy. Since 1 December 2025 every corded internal blind or curtain also needs an anchor so the cord cannot hang in a loop.
Two standards, not one
Window coverings asks for curtains or blinds in any room likely to be a bedroom or living area, able to close, block light and give reasonable privacy. Window covering anchors, added on 1 December 2025, asks that corded internal coverings are fixed so the cord cannot form a loop a child could reach.
Why Tarneit houses miss it
Many Tarneit homes were bought off the plan and handed over with bare windows. The coverings were added afterwards, often in a hurry before the first tenancy, and cheap roller and vertical blinds come with long looped chains and no anchor fitted.
What we check in each room
We close every covering in each bedroom and living space, check it blocks light and gives privacy, and look for a cord or chain on every one. Where there is a cord, there has to be an anchor holding it taut against the wall or frame.
An easy fix
Anchors are small, cheap and quick to fit, and Consumer Affairs Victoria offers free kits. A missing anchor still fails the standard on the day, so fit them before the property is listed.
